Personalised dog figurine: their pose, coat and character
Personalised dog figurine from one photo: their favourite pose, coat and markings, the right moment for the photo, and the right size, alone or with you.

By The FIGU team, 8 min read

A personalised dog figurine is made from a single photo of your dog, even a blurry or crooked one, as long as their head is in it. On their own, dogs are made from 8 to 15 cm and start from €79.99, sculpted and painted by hand, with free delivery; you see the preview for free before you pay, and it usually reaches you 10 to 14 days after you order.
Ask an owner to describe their dog and they’ll rarely mention the breed, but almost always the habits. That’s what the figurine should tell: the head tilted when you talk to them, the paw raised to ask for more, the patch over one eye that gives them a pirate look.
This guide focuses on dogs, from posture to the photo that captures them, to the size that suits them. For an overview that also covers cats, rabbits and family scenes, our guide to the custom pet figurine starts from the very beginning.
Why a personalised dog figurine?
Because a dog takes up a place few objects can capture. A framed photo shows them flat, from one side only; a printed mug ends up at the back of the cupboard; a blanket with their face on it is fun for a week. A figurine can be turned in your fingers, set on a desk and looked at from every angle. It’s not the only good idea, but it’s the one that gives the dog a real presence.
Typical situations aren’t hard to find. The commuter who spends all day away from home and wants their dog next to the screen. The couple celebrating a year since the adoption. The grown-up children who’ve left for university and grew up with this dog. Or the person who wants to hold on to the good years of an old companion with a grey muzzle.
If it’s a gift, think of the owner as much as the dog: a figurine of the two of them together often touches more than a portrait of the dog alone. More ideas that start from the person rather than the shop are in our personalised gift ideas. And the day the dog is no longer there, the figurine takes on another meaning; the last part of our pet guide covers that moment gently.
A word on garden statues: a FIGU measures 8 to 25 cm depending on the composition, made for a shelf or a desk. For a large custom dog statue to stand outside, you’ll need to look at stone or bronze.
Their favourite pose, their real personality
Posture shows character before the coat does. The guardian sits bolt upright facing the door. The lazy one sprawls, chin on paws. The curious one tilts their head, one ear up. Before looking for a photo, ask yourself which attitude you see when you close your eyes.
For a dog on their own, you have three options: keep the posture from your photo, see them sitting, or see them lying down with their front paws stretched out. With one or more people, the dog sits alongside, slightly in front, or under a hand resting on their back. You can change your mind after seeing the preview.
Stable poses make the best pieces. A photo mid-leap, ears flying, looks superb on a screen; on a base, a figurine has to stand and hold together, so some details are simplified. Sitting, lying down or standing on all fours, your dog keeps all their charm.
What they wear matters too. Accessories in the photo end up on the figurine: the red bandana for Sunday walks, the collar with its tag, but also the walking harness you’d rather forget. In that case, one sentence on the preview is enough, “remove the harness”, and only that part is redone.
Coat, markings, ears: the details that matter
No two merle Border Collies have the same map of patches. That’s why hand painting matters: each marking is taken from your photo, and it’s up to you to check on the preview that nothing has moved.
Go over your dog the way you’d describe them to someone who has to spot them in the park: the base colour (fawn, sandy, black, liver), the pattern (brindle, merle, tricolour, white patches), the tan marks above the eyes, the white blaze down the nose, ears pricked or floppy, tail curled or straight. If something is off, correct it in one sentence:
- “the white blaze on the muzzle is thinner”;
- “the tan eyebrows are more marked”;
- “the left ear flops, the right one stands up”;
- “the chest is completely white”.
You have up to five edits per creation. The first needs no account; a free account comes in from the second. Start with what you see from a distance (the colour, the silhouette), then finish with the details of the face.
A word on fur. A figurine follows the preview you approve, but some details are simplified: each lock of an Old English Sheepdog or a Bearded Collie is suggested, not reproduced one by one. The muzzle that has gone grey with age, on the other hand, deserves to stay: it’s part of their story.
The photo: the moment, not the technique
You don’t need a perfect photo or a special session. A phone snap is enough, even blurry, crooked or taken from the other end of the garden, and the free preview shows what comes of it. The only real limit: their head has to be in the picture.
The real choice is the moment, the one when they’re most themselves:
- back from a walk, sitting at your feet, tongue out;
- waiting by the door, ears up at the slightest jingle of keys;
- napping in their bed, or on the sofa they’re not allowed on;
- holding the ball in their mouth, ready to go again.
No need to get them to look at the camera: a Jack Russell watching a squirrel often tells their character better. A very dark or very pale coat? Check it on the preview, and correct any shade that’s off in one sentence.
If the preview doesn’t convince you, try another photo without paying anything: your second preview still needs no account. To go further on choosing the picture and the rest of the process, our guide to the custom figurine from photo covers every step.
On their own or with you: which size?
On their own, your dog is made in 8, 10, 12 or 15 cm. At 8 cm, they fit in one hand and slip in next to a screen; at 15 cm, they become a piece people notice, and it’s the height that shows a busy coat best, merle or tricolour. A dog with a plain coat is happy in a smaller size.
With you, the figurine takes the height of the person’s style: 18, 20 or 23 cm in Classic, with natural proportions; 12, 15, 20 or 25 cm in Big Head, more playful, with the bobblehead option from 15 cm (a dog on their own doesn’t have this option). The dog then sits at your side, on the same base. Every height is shown in our size comparison.
For that you need a photo of you together. A FIGU is made from a single picture: a portrait of the dog and a selfie taken somewhere else can’t be combined. The photo after a walk, the dog sitting against your legs, often does the job.
And if there are several animals in the house, one base holds up to four. Getting the dog and the cat into the same photo takes patience rather than skill: a quiet evening on the sofa, phone within reach, and sooner or later they end up side by side on their own.
Conclusion
A successful personalised dog figurine comes down to three choices: the pose that’s truly them, a photo that shows them as they are, even an imperfect one, then a preview you adjust until you find their markings and their ears. On their own from 8 to 15 cm, or with you on the same base, they keep their look and their character.
If you’re torn between two photos, try both: the preview costs nothing, and the comparison quickly settles it. Nothing is made without your approval, delivery is free everywhere, and you can allow 10 to 14 days from order to delivery.
All that’s left is to pick their best photo and create your dog’s figurine.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a figurine of my dog from a photo?
Yes, a single phone photo is enough, even blurry or crooked, as long as their head is in it. You upload it, see the preview of the figurine for free, then correct anything that’s off in one sentence. Your first two previews and your first edit need no account. If the photo doesn’t work, you try another one at no cost.
What size is a dog figurine?
On their own, a dog is made in 8, 10, 12 or 15 cm: the smallest fits in your hand, the tallest shows the detail of a complex coat best. With one or more people, the figurine follows the chosen style, 18, 20 or 23 cm in Classic, 12 to 25 cm in Big Head, with the dog beside or in front of you.
How much is a personalised dog figurine?
A dog on their own starts from €79.99; the price then depends on the height and the composition, dog alone or with one or more people. It’s shown with every choice, before you order, and it’s the final price, with free delivery. Seeing the preview costs nothing, and our guide to what a custom figurine costs explains what sets the price.
How long does a dog figurine take to arrive?
Usually 10 to 14 days from order to delivery. The clock starts when you order, not when you upload the photo. There’s no photo of the piece during production: the first email after your order is the shipping one, with a tracking link. For a birthday, order three weeks ahead; every deadline is in our page on custom figurine delivery time.
Can my dog and I be on the same figurine?
Yes, as long as you’re together in the same photo, because photos can’t be combined. The person is made in Classic or Big Head, and the dog sits beside you, slightly in front, or under your hand. Up to 13 people and 4 pets fit on one base, so the whole household can join in.
Your memory, for real.
